Fellow Banquet and Scholarship Supporters
Today we are faced with something called COVID-19 a virus that has plagued our nation with a special interest in senior citizens. For over 2 months our nation has been in a “Stay at Home” order by our local governments, state, city, and counties in an effort to limit the exposure to this coronavirus. The general audience for the Levi-Kennedy Memorial Scholarship Banquet’s is comprised of loving people in this concerned aged group. The Scholarship steering committee has made the decision to cancel this year’s banquet scheduled for October 18th, 2020 as have been many venues across the brotherhood. This will be the first time through both minor and major difficulties that the banquet had to be cancelled or postponed in over 43 years.
Levi Kennedy a trailblazer for many years pushing the envelope for students with limited finance to obtain a quality Christian education helped formed what is now called Southwestern Christian College (SWCC). In 1948 GP Bowser led the charge along with Levi Kennedy, J.S. Winston, G.E. Steward, Walter Adams and others to open the college in Texas. Under the presidency for many years of Dr. Jack Evans and now Dr. Ervin Seamster the doors remain open in spite of years of both financial and building difficulties.
With the death of Levi Kennedy in 1970 a memorial scholarship committee was formed to raise monies to help support students to attend SWCC. Members from churches across Chicagoland together vowed not to let his dream die the annual scholarship banquet was formed and every year host nearly 700 people supporting the college and students. Stand with us in our battle to help keep the doors open by donating to our organization Levi-Kennedy Scholarship Organization. This too shall end but SWCC must go on…
